Bio

Growing up as an "army brat", which means I moved every 3-5 years often to new states. These moves included a 3 year stint in Germany when I was in 4th thru 6th grade and 2 years in Hawaii where I finished high school and started college. My childhood helped me to appreciate cultural diversity and appreciate the value of travel and altering one's perspective on national and international issues. Psychology is a great field of science, helping us explain development, social interactions, and understand the complexity of factors impacting human behavior.

Research Interests
Teaching Philosophy

Psychology is a diverse field of scientific study and there is never enough time to cover all the issues. The key is to provide students with enough relevant and significant background for them to appreciate the topic being covered while still allowing them the mental energy to be critical thinkers. I feel that teachers should encourage their students to be thoughtful consumers of information. I encourage my students to be skeptical of simple explanations and easy answers.

ASSESSING EFFECTIVE TEACHING IN A SEMINAR COURSE

In a previous study we investigated whether various psychology
courses change nature-nurture beliefs or misconceptions of
students. The only students that showed evidence of changing
their beliefs were ones completing a Nature-Nurture (N-N)
seminar. The purpose of the present study was to further
investigate aspects of the N-N seminar by collecting students’
daily feedback over the semester. Overall, the data indicates that
students found class discussions to be interesting, engaging, and
productive.

Executive Function and Inhibitory Control in Preschool aged children

This project assessed preschoolers’ executive function in two everyday contexts (i.e., home & daycare) using the rating scales of a clinically derived instrument (BRIEF-P, Gioia, Espy, & Isquith, 2003). There were 144 BRIEF-P forms collected for 77 children (46 boys, 31 girls), half of the forms were completed by parents. Correlations between parent and teacher ratings on like scales of the BRIEF-P were modest. Findings fit with earlier research (Gioia, Espy, & Isquith, 2003).
